Preparing for a Concert: A Pianist's Reflection

February 5, 2026 · Marta Kowalska

Every concert begins long before the lights dim. It begins in the quiet of a practice room, with a single phrase played a hundred times — not to perfect it, but to understand it. To find the breathing inside the notes, the silence between the sounds.

For my upcoming recital at Chopin Garden, I have spent three months with the same works I have known for years. And yet, they surprise me still. That is the gift of great music: it never finishes teaching you.

I am particularly looking forward to the nocturnes on this program. Chopin's nocturnes are, for me, the most personal of all musical forms. They ask the pianist to be completely honest — there is nowhere to hide inside such transparency. I hope to bring something genuine to the audience. Something that makes the evening feel less like a performance and more like a conversation between friends.
